Carpal tunnel syndrome is an inflammatory condition of the wrist. The anatomy of your wrist includes a small tunnel – the carpal tunnel – through which tendons and nerves travel. Among these tendons is one particular nerve which supplies a significant portion of the hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when inflammation occurs in that tunnel. This causes swelling and puts pressure on the nerve, which can cause pain, numbness and tingling.
Common causes of CTS are pregnancy, side effects of medication, and repetitive motions (such as typing). Those who rely regularly on the strength of their forearms and wrists (i.e., mechanics, receptionists, cashiers, musicians) are prone to developing CTS.
CTS can be confused with the irritation of nerves in your neck, shoulders, and elbows, which can cause similar symptoms (radiculopathy).
How we can help:
NOTE: As mentioned above, CTS has symptoms that are similar to the irritation of nerves in your neck, shoulders, and elbows. Laser Therapy can also be an effective treatment for this type of nerve irritation.
