A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched beyond its normal length. A strain occurs when a muscle is stretched beyond its normal length. In more serious cases, tearing can occur with either injury, and sometimes both injuries occur at the same time. Typically there is pain, swelling, loss of range of motion, and sometimes bruising around the sprain and/or strain.
